Dunn's Music Spotlight

Q

By Bill Dunn

Whenever I receive a new CD to listen to, it usually takes time for me to formulate my opinions on what the potential of the band may be. One listening is never enough to get a true feel for what the music is all about. But with this band, one listening was enough. From the first time I heard the CD I was entranced by the whirling landscapes that this group was painting for my ears.

The name of the band is Q and the more I listened to it the deeper under their spell I fell. All the songs, without exception, are powerful and compelling without being heavy handed and bombastic. Industrial, but accessible to the average listener, and complex enough to keep hard core musical aficionados interested in its ever changing modes.

This Los Angeles based band's self-titled CD takes off from the very first note and does not let you land until the last note fades away. The first track, "World On My Back", signals you to the ride you are in for, it's rhythmic pulsating beat sets the tone and previews you to the twists and turns that lay ahead. You are quickly propelled into the songs "High Life", "Smash" and 'Wrist" all of which are worthy of radio airplay and will be, as soon as they are signed to a record label. Which if the attention their live performances and Internet downloads are generating, should not be long.

Any group that is this good is only as good as its parts and all of its parts are platinum. Drummer Trevor Thornton supplies the multi-layered back beat that gives the sound its solid base of attack. The urgency with which he attacks his drums is intense and right on the money. Guitarist extraordinare Trey Vittetoe is absolutely amazing; the shape shifting sounds he produces are otherworldly. Bassist and background vocalist Slobo Svrdlan, formerly of Gene Loves Jezebel, adds the hard driving bass that gives the backbone that a band of this nature must have. His backup vocals add the perfect harmony to the lead vocals of Paul Van Rensburg. Van Rensburgs vocals soar and draw comparisons to David Bowie, Bryan Ferry, and Jim Morrison. You could not ask for a better musical guide to the land that is Q.

Getting a copy of this great CD is easy. All you need to do is go to the Q web site at either www.mp3.com/q or www.SpinRecords.com you there can either order the CD or download it.
